  • Performs with complete transparency to applications running on the platform

What Is Data Replication?

Data Replication involves creating a duplicate database on a separate machine at a different location. This promotes data availability, reliability and resilience across an organization. By replicating data from a source location to one or more target locations, organizations can minimize downtime, prevent data loss and improve business continuity.

How Does Data Replication Work?

In data replication, data is copied from one storage system or database to another. This process typically includes three main steps:

  • Capturing Changes: Monitoring the origin database for inserts, deletes, updates or other changes.
  • Transmitting Data: Transmitting the detected changes to the target storage systems or databases.
  • Applying Changes: Applying the changes to the target databases so they mirror the source database.

Data Replication Types

Various types of data replication exist, and which type is used depends on the needs of the business:

  • Snapshot Replication: Copies data exactly as it appears at a specific point in time.
  • After Imaging Replication: Records transactions in a log file, allowing you to restore the last backup and replay transactions if the system fails.
  • Transactional Replication: Continuously replicates data changes in real time, enabling consistency.

Data replication offers numerous benefits:

Faster Disaster Recovery: Maintains copies of data in different locations, minimizing data loss and downtime.

Improved Fault Tolerance: Provides redundancy to support uninterrupted operations even if one copy is lost.

Up to the Last Transaction: Replicates every transaction as it occurs, with the recovery point being the last transaction in the primary system.

Data replication – Examples

  • Healthcare: Replicated data helps prevent patient information from being lost and enables it to be quickly restored to maintain uninterrupted patient care.
  • Financial Services: Data replication helps maintain transaction records across multiple locations. A financial institution can recover the latest transaction data, so financial operations can continue smoothly.
  • Manufacturing: Data replication helps preserve production schedules and inventory data, allowing the factory to resume operations with minimal disruption.

For businesses, data replication helps enable high data availability and accessibility, facilitating seamless operations and improved disaster recovery. It supports mission-critical applications by providing consistent and reliable data access.

Key Features

  • Replication Target Synchronization provides a three-pronged failover approach for ongoing maintenance and automatic transition in case of unplanned downtime.
  • Online Index Activation allows you to add new indexes to the schema without downtime. Add indexes at your convenience, but deploy changes when ready without disrupting the application.

New in OpenEdge Replication

  • Ensure recovery within seconds through automatic database recovery.
  • Allows databases to remain running throughout the failover transition, reducing downtime.
  • Manually transition into a new source and target to ensure replication continues when database is lost.
  • Maintains high availability when the OpenEdge database becomes unavailable by specifying an alternate database connection, and more.
