How IBM Cloud SQL Query and DataDirect Hybrid Data Pipeline Power Easy Connectivity

April 06, 2021 Data & AI, DataDirect

Do you use IBM Cloud SQL Query and a BI tool that only uses ODBC connectors? If so, this blog is for you.

IBM Cloud SQL Query is an IBM Cloud service that allows users to access and process data on IBM Cloud Object Storage using standard SQL. IBM Cloud SQL Query provides a Web UI, a REST API, SDKs for Python, Go, Node.js and a JDBC driver for access.

The JDBC driver works great with BI tools using that interface, but some BI tools—Microsoft Power BI and QlikView come to mind—only use ODBC. If you or your clients’ use business intelligence tools such as these, you’re going to need another way to connect to your data.

Our friends at IBM suggest you use Progress DataDirect Hybrid Data Pipeline, and it just so happens we agree. Dr. Ute Schuerfeld of IBM wrote a great step-by-step tutorial for the IBM blog explaining how easily IBM Cloud SQL Query and Hybrid Data Pipeline (HDP) can complement one another. (Not to be confused with how we’re currently complimenting one another.)

You see, empowering applications with enterprise data is our passion here at DataDirect. For decades, we’ve been solving cloud and on-premises data connectivity problems across Relational, NoSQL, Big Data and SaaS data sources. Performance, reliability and security are at the heart of everything we design. That is why DataDirect is the trusted vendor for 350-plus ISVs and 10,000-plus enterprises for all their analytics, integration and data management needs.

The IBM tutorial explains how IBM Cloud SQL Query users can get started with Hybrid Data Pipeline, set up JDBC connectivity from HDP to IBM, then set up ODBC connectivity through HDP. When the process is complete, you'll be ready to use any tool with just ODBC connectivity as if the relationship had always existed.

Creating connectivity where previously there was none is just one of the many reasons why people love Hybrid Data Pipeline. HDP enables users to access any data wherever it is stored—in the cloud or on-premises—through ODBC, JDBC, or OData. HDP users can securely access data from behind firewalls without needing to create multiple connection points to the data sources themselves.

With HDP, end users will never have knowledge of or feel friction from any changes happening to the data sources. Hybrid Data Pipeline is like the magic behind the scenes that powers your data connectivity.

If you’d like to learn more about Hybrid Data Pipeline and the many ways it can better connect you to your data, go ahead and start a free trial to test drive it yourself. If you’re interested in learning more about how HDP can connect you to your IBM Cloud Object Storage data, or that of any other database or application, feel free to contact us. We’re always happy to help you find the best solution for your business and your data.
