VoltDB and the Power of Optimized Data Access

November 18, 2014 Data & AI, DataDirect

VoltDB is an in-memory scale-out SQL database built to power the next generation of streaming data applications, including recommendation engines, sensor applications like smart-grid power systems, telco policy and billing, real-time digital advertising platforms, click stream processing, auditing of market data orders, and risk management and fraud detection. As highlighted in the latest Gartner Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems, it is evident that VoltDB is one of rising stars in the constellation of ultra high-performance and highly scalable databases – using NewSQL technology and based on Java.

In order to preserve the high-powered characteristics that VoltDB is known for, they needed to build an optimized data access method. Also, their in-memory database customers required the ability to visualize and access data through standard analytics and business intelligence solutions such as Tableau and Microstrategy.

To VoltDB, the DataDirect leadership and proven success in the market was a compelling reason to partner with Progress. And after some competitive comparisons, the VoltDB team settled on the OpenAccess SDK from DataDirect for building an ODBC driver they needed.

And the results? VoltDB was able to reduce their time to market by 50% versus other solutions. In the end, they were able to develop a prototype in one month, releasing the new driver in just three months. Check out the VoltDB case study and expect to hear more with an upcoming Webinar that provides more details on their implementation and OpenAccess usage.
