Webinar: Configuring Salesforce External Object Reports

December 09, 2016 Data & AI

Do you use Salesforce? If you do, chances are you are excited about external object support for reports! Here’s what you need to know.

We have been eagerly awaiting external object support for reports, and we are sharing everything you need to know for 2017 in our upcoming webinar. This winter, you will have the capability to build native reports with on-demand access to external data sources such as Oracle, SQL Server, Greenplum, Amazon Redshift, IBM DB2 or Hadoop Big Data Platforms. Salesforce Connect provides clicks-not-code data access to these external objects for admins, devs and general users.

External Object Reports—Get a Seamless View of Data Across System Boundaries

In Salesforce’s 2017 release notes, they offer some key information regarding external object support. There will still be limitations to keep in mind, but users can now run reports on all data regardless of where it is stored.

Setting up reports for an external object will involves these high level steps:

  1. Select “Allow Reports” on the external object.

Enabling reports creates the following in the Other Reports report type category:

    1. A report type for the external object
    2. A report type for each lookup relationship in which both objects allow reports

Report types aren’t created for external lookup or indirect lookup relationships, but you can create custom report types for these relationships.

  2. If needed, create custom report types.

report type defines the set of records and fields available to a report based on the relationships between a primary object and its related objects. Reports display only records that meet the criteria defined in the report type.

  3. Build and test reports as an end user.
  4. Notify your users with the names of the category folders and the custom report types so that they can create and run reports on external objects.
