Administration: Configure SMTP server

Use this procedure to configure email setting – SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. The settings are needed for the system to send emails with campaigns to subscribers.

You configure Email campaigns settings in the following way:

1. In the main menu, click Administration » Settings.
   If you have multisite, click Global settings.
   The Basic Settings page appears.
2. Click Email Campaigns.
   The SMTP settings appear.
3. In Select email service, choose which email notification profile you want to use for sending email campaigns.
   All of the following profiles use SMTP.
   Select one of the following:
   • Default
     This is the Default Sitefinity CMS notification profile. It provides the ability to track bounces. Before you use it, you must configure it. For more information, see Administration: Configure notification profiles.
     If you want to use a notification profile different than the Default, you still select this option and in Step 4, you can choose which profile you want to use.
   • SendGrid
     Configure the required server settings. Using this SendGrid SMTP profile, you cannot track bounces.
     

     NOTE: You can integrate SendGrid Web API in Sitefinity CMS and use the full functionality of SendGrid, including bounce tracking and email campaign reports. For more information, see Administration: Configure SendGrid.

   • Mandrill
     Configure the required server settings. With this service, you cannot track bounced emails.
   • MailGun
     Configure the required server settings. With this service, you cannot track bounced emails.
4. In Notifications SMTP Profile, enter the notification profile that you want to use for sending email campaigns.
   Email campaigns relies on the Notification service for sending emails. To use it, you must configure the notification profile that you want to use. There you configure the SMTP server settings and, if you want to send emails in batches, you can set the batch size and the pause interval between batches. For more information, see Administration: Configure notification profiles.
5. You can immediately check how the settings work, by entering a test email and clicking Send check message button.
6. If you want to track messages that are not delivered to the subscribers, select Track bounced messages checkbox.

   Configure the following:
   1. Enter your POP3 account settings.
      You need a POP3 server account that will collect the bounces.
   2. Under Soft bounce, select what you want to do in case of soft bounce.
      A soft bounce is a temporary problem that prevents the email to be delivered to the recipient.
      Select one of the following:
      • Do nothing
        Take no action.
      • Retry sending
        The send operation will be retried.
        You configure the retry interval and retry count in the Advanced settings.
      • Suspend subscriber
        The subscriber will be marked as Suspended and will be skipped in the future.
      • Delete subscriber
        The subscriber is permanently removed from the mailing list.
   3. Under Hard bounce, select what you want to do in case of hard bounce.
      A hard bounce indicates a permanent problem that prevents the email to be delivered to the recipient. 
      • Do nothing
      • Suspend subscriber
      • Delete subscriber.
7. When finished, click Save changes.
8. If you have chosen to Track bounced messages, perform the following:
   1. In the toolbar, click Advanced » Newsletters.
   2. In Collect bounces every (minutes), enter the length of interval in minutes that the system will collect bounce messages from the POP3 account.
   3. In Collect bounces retry count, enter the number of times that the system will collect bounce messages from the POP3 account.
   4. In Bounced messages retry interval, enter the length of interval in minutes that the system will retry to send soft bounced messages.
   5. In Bounced messages retry count, enter the number of times that the system will retry to send soft bounced messages.
   6. In Disable Sitefinity CMS email headers, select whether you want Sitefinity CMS email headers to be disabled.
   7. Click Save changes.
