Run Sitefinity CMS on .NET Framework 4.0

Sitefinity CMS runs on Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.5. Use this procedure, if you want to run your Sitefinity CMS project under .NET Framework 4.0.

RESTRICTIONS: If you choose to run Sitefinity CMS under .NET Framework 4.0, you will not have ASP.NET MVC and the Feather module will not be available.

Perform the following:

  1. If you have Feather installed in your project, remove Telerik.Sitefinity.Feather package, including any references in the project and the packages that it depends on – Telerik.Sitefinity.Feather.Core and Ninject.
  2. Remove Telerik.Sitefinity.Mvc package, including the packages that it depends on – Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc, Microsoft.AspNet.Razor and Microsoft.AspNet.WebPages.
  3. In the web.config file, change the target framework to 4.0.
  4. Install the following packages:
    • AspNetMvc package version 4.0.20710.0.
      Including all the dependencies - Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc (version ≥ 4.0.20710.0 && < 4.1) and Microsoft.AspNet.WebPages (version ≥ 2.0.20710.0 && < 2.1)
    • Microsoft.AspNet.Razor (version ≥ 2.0.20710.0 && < 2.1)
    • Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure (version ≥ 1.0.0.0)
  5. In your web.config, change the following sections to have content:
    <sectionGroup name="system.web.webPages.razor" type="System.Web.WebPages.Razor.Configuration.RazorWebSectionGroup, System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35">
     
    <section name="host" type="System.Web.WebPages.Razor.Configuration.HostSection, System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" requirePermission="false" />
     
    <section name="pages" type="System.Web.WebPages.Razor.Configuration.RazorPagesSection, System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" requirePermission="false" />
     
    <host factoryType="System.Web.Mvc.MvcWebRazorHostFactory, System.Web.Mvc, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" />
  6. Reinstall all packages.
    To do this, open the packages.config and check which packages have attribute requireReinstallation="True". To reinstall a package, in the package manager console, run command Update-Package –Reinstall <package name>.
  7. Rebuild the project.
