Sort, filter, and manage page templates

To view and manage all templates that your website pages are based on, navigate to Design » Page templates. The Templates list provides you with details about each template, including:

Description

Title

The title and status of the template. Click the title to open the template for editing.

Based on

MVC only templates

The layout file, on which the current MVC template is based on or a link to an existing page template, on which the current template is based. The system automatically generates the location path of the layout file based on Sitefinity CMS MVC templates conventions, for example,\ResourcePackages\Bootstrap4\Mvc\Views\layouts\default.cshtml. For more information, see Map new templates to a file in the file system.

Thus, you can easily check the resource package that the template uses, for example,Bootstrap4. You can also see how many and which pages use this template.

NOTE: If you modify the template name or delete the template altogether, you can still see the template in the list, along with the original automatically generated path.

Keep in mind that when creating a new MVC template from scratch, even when you do not base it on any existing template, the system still automatically generates the path where the layout file should be located, based on conventions. For more information, see For developers: Create MVC page templates based on layout files.

Web Forms and Hybrid templates

The master file, on which the template is based or a link to an existing page template, on which the current template is based.

Date/Owner

The date when the template was last modified and by which user.

You can filter the list with page templates to view just the templates for the current site, for example, or the templates you created.

Sort page templates

You can sort templates using the Sort templates dropdown box in the toolbar of the page.

There are the following sorting options:

  • Last modified on top
Sorts templates in descending order according to time of modification.
  • Alphabetically ascending or descending.

Filter page templates

  • All Templates
    Displays all created templates.
If you have a multisite instance, this filter displays page templates from all the sites on the multisite instance, regardless of whether the templates are shared with the current site or not.
  • Filter by ownership.
To display page templates, created only by your user, in the right side of the Templates page, click My Templates.
If you have a multisite instance, this filters displays all templates from all sites that are created by the logged in user, regardless of whether the templates are shared with the current site or not.
  • Special filtering
If you have a multisite instance, the following filtering option appears:
    • This site
Filters the page templates that are shared only on the current site from the multisite instance.
    • Not shared with any site
If you deselect all the sites where a template is visible, you can still see the template on the Templates page by clicking this filter.
