Use tags
Overview
You use tags to filter content items according to some criterion. By clicking on different tags from the list of tags displayed on the webpage, the user can filter the content on the page. You can apply tags both to built-in types, such as news and events, as well as to dynamic types – types that you have created.
You manage tags on the Tags page.
To open the Tags page, in the main navigation, click Content » Tags.
The Tags page appears, displaying a list of all created tags together with actions you can perform on them.
EXAMPLE: If you have a list of news, some of which are news about the weather and you have tagged them with the tag weather, and some news are about the traffic and you have tagged them with tag traffic, by adding the Tags widget to your page, you give the users the opportunity to filter only traffic or only weather news by clicking the respective tag.
To display list of tags on your website, you must use the Tags widget and you must configure it.

Create tags
To create a tag:
- In Sitefinity CMS backend, navigate to Content » Tags.
- On the Tags page, click Create a tag.
- Enter a unique name for the new tag.
- Optionally, you can change the default URL of the tag by clicking (Edit) button and entering the preferred URL.
- Click Create.
View tags
You view and manage tags on the Tags page.
To open the Tags page, in the main navigation, click Content » Tags.
The Tags page appears, displaying an alphabetically ordered list of all created tags, together with actions that you can perform on them. For each tag you can view the following:
- The tag NAME
- The tag URL
- The items that the tag is APPLIED TO
In this column you see a number of items or pages that are tagged with this particular tag.
If you click the number icon, a list of items belonging to the selected tag appears.
NOTE: If you have more than one languages configured on the website, you can also see TRANSLATIONS column.
Sort tags
To sort tags, on Tags page, click (Filter tags) button.
In the Sort tags dropdown box, select one of the following:
- By title (A-Z) or By title (Z-A)
Sorts the tags alphabetically ascending or descending.
- Most used or Least used
Sorts the tags according to the number of items tagged with a tag.
- Last modified on top
Sorts tags in descending order according to time of modification.
NOTE: You can also sort by clicking the column headers. You can sort by column NAME and column APPLIED TO, which orders the list by most or least used categories.
Filter tags
To filter tags, on Tags page, click (Filter tags) button.
You can filter tags by their first letter. You can also see how many tags there are that begin with a particular letter.
If your website is translated in more than one languages, you can also filter the tags, based on the language that they exist in, using the Languages dropdown box.
Tag properties
To edit the properties of a tag, on Tags page, click a tag.
You can edit or enter the following:
- To change the name of the tag, overwrite the existing one
- To edit the URL of the tag, click (Edit), change the URL, and press
ENTER
.
- In the Advanced options section, you can do the following:
- Add a Description for the tag.
- Enter Synonyms for the tag so that you can filter content items by the tag name or its synonyms.
- When you are finished, click Save changes.
Bulk edit properties
You can edit the name, the URL name, and the synonyms of all tags at the same time.
- On the Tags page, select the tags that you want tot edit.
- Click Bulk actions » Properties (bulk).
The Bulk edit of tag properties page opens, displaying a list of all tags together with their URLs and synonyms.
- For each tag, edit its name, URL, or synonyms as needed.
- Save your changes.
Merge tags
You can merge two or more tags into one tag. This operation moves all items of the tags that you want to merge to a specified tag. It also merges all existing synonyms of the tags into the synonym list of the selected tag.
EXAMPLE: You have two items tagged with tag forecast and five tagged with tag weather. You want to have only one tag – weather. You should select tags forecast and weather and merge them into tag weather. This way, tag forecast is deleted, its two items are tagged with tag weather, and tag weather has seven items tagged with it.
To merge tags, perform the following:
- On Tags page, select two or more tags that you want to merge.
- Expand Bulk actions and click Merge tags.
- Select the tag, which you want to merge the selected tags to.
- Click Merge.
Move items to another tag
In addition to merging, you can also move items from one or more tags to another tag. The operation moves all items of the selected tags and assigns them another tag.
To move items, perform the following:
- On Tags page, select one or more tags whose items you want to migrate.
- Expand Bulk actions and click Move items to another tag.
- Select the new tag, which you want to tag items with.
- Click Move.
Translate tags
If you have more than one language translations of your website, you may want to translate not only items and pages, but also the tags that they are tagged with.
If you have more than one languages configured on your website, on the Tags page, you can see an additional column TRANSLATIONS. In this column the system displays the icons of the languages. The darker icons represent languages, which a particular tag is translated to.
To translate a tag in another language, on Tags page, click the respective language icon of the tag.
For example, if you want to translate a tag in Spanish, in column TRANSLATIONS click ES.
You translate the following:
- Translate the tag itself
- Add a different URL
- Add language specific Description
- Add language specific Synonyms
