Add related data and related media

You can add relations between content by adding Related data and Related media custom fields. The custom fields can then be used to create relation between the items of the specified content types. You can also create one-to-one or one-to-many relations between different items. Sitefinity CMS makes it easy to display all related items on the frontend. For example, you can relate an image of a doctor to an article about Medical research. For more information about adding the Related data and Related media custom fields, see Create custom fields.

When adding related content, you can either selected an item from a list with existing content or create a new item. Depending on what custom fields you added to your content type, you can see one or both of the following additional content options:

• Related data
• Related media

Keep in mind that in case you configured your related content fields to use all content providers for this site, content editors will have the flexibility to choose content from more sources and not just the default source for the content and the site they are working with. For more information, see Related content and content providers.

1. Expand the Related data section.
2. Click the plus sign under the type of content you want to relate to, for example, Related news.
3. Choose an event from the list.
   If the list is longer than a few items, you can expand the full list by clicking Show all news, for example. You can narrow down the list by typing.

   NOTE: In case you configured your related content fields to use all sources for the current site, you can choose content from different providers. By default, the items list displays items from the default provider for this content types for this site. To browse the related content from all providers, click See all news. From the dropdown menu, you can choose the provider whose content to browse. For more information about providers, see Related content and content providers.

4. To select multiple items, from the expanded list select the items you want to relate your content to.

   NOTE: In case the related data field uses more than one provider, you can switch providers from the dropdown menu. You can then see a list of all items you selected in the Selected tab.

5. You can also create a new item of the same type. Simply click Create a news, for example, and enter your content.

   IMPORTANT: By default, the new item is stored in the Default source for this site. If you configured your related content fields to use all sources for the current site, and in case you are working with the classic content editor, you can choose where to store your content, that is, the content provider. When working with the new content editor, the content item can only be stored in the Default source for this site.

Once you have your list with related items ready, you can reorder it with dragging and dropping the items up and down the list.

1. Expand the Related media section.
2. Depending on what related media fields types you added, for example, Related images, click the Select images button.
3. Choose an image from the list.
   The images on top are the ones most recently used or added.
   If the list is longer than a few items, you can expand the full list by clicking Show all news, for example. You can narrow down the list by typing.

   NOTE: In case you configured your related media fields to use all sources for the current site, you can choose media from different providers. By default, the items list displays items from the default provider for this media type for this site. To browse the related media from other providers, expand the dropdown menu on top and choose a provider. As a result, the Recent tab will list the most recent media form the selected provider. For more information about providers, see Custom fields and Content relations API.

4. To select multiple media items, simply click on the items and then choose Use selected.

   NOTE: In case the related media field uses more than one provider and you want to use items from different providers, you can switch providers from the dropdown menu. You can then see a list of all items you selected in the Selected tab.

5. You can also upload an item, say, an image. To do so, click the upload icon.
6. Select an item to upload and click Open.
7. Choose where to store your item.

   NOTE: If you configured your related media field to use all providers for the site, you will have the option to choose to which provider to upload your media item. Otherwise, you can choose only the library where to store the uploaded item. When you change the provider, the relevant libraries change accordingly.

If you configured your related media fields to use all sources for the current site, and in case you are working with the classic content editor, you can choose where to store your content, that is, the content provider. When working with the new content editor, the content item can only be stored in the Default source for this site.
